Bakhtiar Rugs

Garden Carpets from the Zagros Mountains

The Story

Bakhtiari rugs come from the Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province of southwestern Iran, where the historically nomadic Bakhtiari people now largely settled around Shahr-e Kord and Shahrekord in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains. Their rugs have a distinctive and beloved character: bold, confident floral compositions organized in garden (khesti) layouts—the field divided into compartments, each containing a flowering tree, flower vase, or botanical scene.

The wool varies from one village to another—sometimes dull, sometimes extraordinarily glossy—and the pile is medium to high. The highest-quality Bakhtiari rugs, known as Blour Baft or Chahar Mahal, have a very high knot density and are distinguished collector's pieces. Garden patterns, cypress trees, and pomegranate motifs dominate, with a rich color range that often includes forest green, wine red, and warm ivory.

Bakhtiari rugs bring a garden into your home—a bold, decorative statement with genuine tribal heritage.
