Zabol Rugs
Sistan Tribal Weaving from Iran's Ancient Southeast
The Story
Zabol is a city in Sistan and Baluchestan province in the far southeast of Iran, close to the Afghan border, in one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited regions. The area was part of the ancient Helmand civilization, and weaving traditions here are among the most ancient in the Persian world.
Zabol rugs reflect the tribal and semi-nomadic heritage of the region: bold geometric patterns, naturally dyed wool in earthy and saturated hues, and a direct, powerful aesthetic that feels distinct from both the tribal traditions of western Iran and the city workshops of the center. These are genuinely remote-origin pieces—from the edge of the Persian world, carrying a character that is unique and unmistakable.
