Shahr-Babak Rugs
Rustic Authenticity with Polished Presence
The Story
Shahr-e Babak rugs are hand-knotted Persian carpets from the city of Shahr-e Babak in Kerman Province, where tribal Afshar weavers work under the strong influence of the wider Kerman tradition. This dual heritage creates a distinctive character: bold tribal energy expressed through classically Persian motifs.
Designs range from striking geometric medallions and allover star and boteh (paisley) layouts to lattice, Minakhani floral, and elaborate Lavar-style garden and tree-of-life patterns. Weavers use both symmetrical and asymmetric Persian knotting, with finer pieces leaning toward the asymmetric knot under Kerman influence.
The result is rustic authenticity with a surprisingly polished room presence—these hand-knotted rugs feel genuine and characterful while still looking composed and intentional.
