Kerman Rugs

Kerman is one of Iran's great carpet cities, with a weaving history dating to the 15th century under the Safavid royal workshops, where the legendary vase carpets were created. Located in a desert oasis in southeastern Iran, Kerman developed a distinctive style defined by light, luminous color grounds, often ivory, rose, and soft blue, with lush, curvilinear floral designs that fill every inch of the field. The asymmetric Persian knot is used throughout, allowing extraordinary fineness.

By the 19th century, Kerman had become the preeminent supplier of luxury carpets to the Western market. Merchants from New York and London ordered bespoke pieces in European color preferences, creating the "American Sarouk" style and establishing Kerman as the carpet of fine American homes. Today, the finest Kerman pieces remain among the most prized collector textiles.
