Where it comes from
This is a Kerman, also written Kirman, from the desert oasis city in south-eastern Iran that traces its workshop lineage back to the royal Safavid ateliers of the fifteenth century and their celebrated vase carpets. Kerman is generally known for pale, luminous grounds in ivory, rose and soft blue carrying dense curvilinear florals. This piece measures 125 x 65 cm (4'1" x 2'2") and quietly turns that convention on its head.
What you see
The field is a deep midnight blue, close to black, and across it a single naturalistic rose bouquet floats at the centre, echoed by four matching sprays in the corners. Cream and ivory petals, pink and red roses, and clusters of powder-blue forget-me-nots sit among olive-green leaves and scrolling stems. At its base the bouquet curls into a leaf-like scroll, more European ornament than classical Persian motif. A wide, multi-row border repeats the same rose-and-forget-me-not garland on the same dark ground, so the boundary is drawn by density of pattern alone, not by colour.
How it was made
The precision comes from the way Kerman workshops draw every design on paper before a knot is tied, then follow that cartoon exactly rather than working from memory. The asymmetric Persian knot, set here at 128,000 to 160,000 per square metre, is fine enough to round out a petal or curve a stem cleanly, without the stepped edge a coarser weave would leave. Hand-spun wool, clipped to a neat 12 millimetres, carries a light sheen that gives the dark ground its faint depth rather than flatness.
