Azarbayedjan Rugs

Northwest Iran's Ancient Weaving Crossroads

The Story

Azerbaijan province in northwest Iran is one of the oldest carpet-weaving regions in the world—13th-century Arab geographers were already documenting its textile production. The province encompasses seven distinct weaving sub-regions, including Tabriz, and its rugs reflect this extraordinary diversity: from the geometric boldness of village and tribal work to the refined city-workshop designs associated with Tabriz.

What unites Azerbaijani rugs is a shared visual language rooted in northwest Persian and Caucasian traditions: strong geometric medallions, angular arabesque borders, and a preference for rich, deep color grounds. The copper-rich water in parts of the region is said to contribute to the exceptional durability of local wool.

An Azarbayedjan rug carries the weight of centuries of weaving culture at the crossroads of Persia, Turkey, and the Caucasus—a genuinely historical piece that brings depth and warmth to any room.
