About This Azerbaijan

Where it comes from

This is a rug from Azerbaijan, the northwestern Iranian province that has been weaving since the thirteenth century, sized at 337 x 240 cm (11'1" x 7'10"). The province holds seven distinct weaving districts, Tabriz among them, and its rugs are known for bold geometric medallions and angular arabesque borders set against deep, saturated grounds. This piece, though, carries no medallion at all.

What you see

The eye meets a deep navy-black field, dense with a fine Mahi diamond lattice, each cell outlined in cream. Instead of the muted rosettes this pattern usually carries, small bouquets of dusky rose-pink repeat across the dark ground, with steel-blue guard stripes and touches of mustard-gold and sage held quietly within the grid. A broad rust-brick red border closes the design, its cream vine-and-palmette scrollwork carrying dark palmettes, wide enough to claim a fifth of the rug's width and warm enough to answer the field's darkness.

How it was made

Hand-knotted, with hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, the pile carries a faint irregularity and light sheen, set at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre — fine enough to keep the lattice lines crisp and the pink bouquets legible, at a firm 8 mm pile. That fineness let the weaver place each bouquet by eye, which is why they scatter through the lattice rather than repeat to a fixed rhythm. Being newly made, this is a rug meant for daily footfall rather than careful preservation.

At home

In a living or dining room, under a table or beside a sofa, the navy-black field holds its own against dark wood and dark upholstery, while the rust-red border and pink bouquets keep it from reading as sombre. Underfoot it sits dense and firm, ready for daily traffic. As light crosses the room, the small pink bouquets catch it first, surfacing across the dark lattice like flowers at dusk.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 337 × 240 cm (8.09 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 8.09 m² that is roughly 1.6 to 2.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
