Nain Rugs

Filigree Elegance with Silk Highlights

The Story

Nain is a relatively young weaving city in central Iran — the tradition only began in earnest in the 1930s when the local textile industry declined, yet in less than a century it has risen to the top tier of Persian carpet production. Nain rugs are classified by "La" count: 6La means 6-thread ply (the finest), 9La is slightly coarser. A 6La Nain with silk highlights can reach 300-500 knots per dm², making it one of the most technically demanding rugs produced in Iran. Asymmetric Persian knot on a cotton foundation with wool pile and silk highlights.

The unmistakable aesthetic — ivory or cream ground with cobalt blue arabesques and delicate silk shimmer — is executed with mathematical precision. Designs draw from classical Isfahan and Kashan traditions but rendered with Nain's signature lightness. The short, neat pile height keeps detail crisp and the surface lustrous without being heavy.

A Nain 6La with silk is high-end collector territory. The 9La and standard Nain offer the same refined aesthetic at a more accessible price point — exceptional value for the quality of draughtsmanship. These rugs suit formal living spaces, studies, and dining rooms where their quiet sophistication can be appreciated.
