About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain, 302 x 242 cm (9'11" x 7'11"), from the workshops of the small central Iranian town that gave its name to some of the finest weaving to come out of Persia. Nain is known for setting silk against fine wool, usually in the ivory-and-blue combination the town has made its signature, and for floral drawing worked with real precision. This piece keeps to that palette, but more quietly than most Nain rugs allow themselves.
What you see
The field is a pale, even ivory, carried edge to edge by a dense scrolling vine in slate blue-grey, with no medallion to anchor it. Small palmettes and rosettes run through the design, and here and there a rosette holds a touch of brick red or dark navy, so faint you find it rather than see it. The border keeps the same restraint, a narrow multi-band trim in cream and soft grey-blue, set close to the field rather than framing it with contrast. Colour is not doing the work in this rug. How it was made
That drawing is fine enough to carry the design on its own because of how it was made. The pile is hand-knotted in wool lifted with silk over a cotton warp, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — a count that lets a weaver turn a line as fine as a stem or a petal edge without it blurring into the ground beside it. Silk spins thinner than wool, so the highlighted outlines of the scrollwork sit crisp against the cream field even at twelve millimetres of pile height, which is low enough to keep the surface even and fine rather than deep.
At home
At just over three metres by two, this is a rug for a dining table or a living room seating group, somewhere it will be looked at as much as walked on. Against a pale floor it warms the room without asserting itself, and beside darker furniture the ivory field will hold its own quietly rather than competing. Underfoot it is dense and firm, wool with enough body to take daily use well. What stays with you is the light: as it shifts through the day, the silk in the scrollwork catches and softens, so the same quiet field never looks quite the same twice.
