About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, also written Na'in, from the city of that name in central Iran, a workshop tradition known for extremely fine knotting and silk highlights on wool. At 350 x 247 cm (11'6" x 8'1"), it is sized for a proper room. Nain is usually built around ivory and pale blue; here the ground is a deep navy, an unusual contrast for the type.

What you see

An ivory medallion floats on the navy field, held by a dense scroll of floral vine and palmettes in fine, closely clipped wool. The four corners repeat that same ivory, so the eye moves in a rhythm of light, dark, light rather than settling on the medallion alone. Soft blue-grey and dusty pink tracery runs through the flowers, with small red and burgundy accents in the border. A wide sandy-beige floral border closes the design, framed on either side by a slim blue-grey guard stripe.

How it was made

A knot density of 441,000 to 500,000 per square metre is what keeps the scrollwork this fine without blurring into the navy ground, and at that density a single square metre takes months at the loom. Silk spins far finer than wool, which is why the highlights in the medallion sit crisp rather than soft, holding each palmette's edge. An 8 mm pile, closely sheared, keeps that precision at the surface, and the cotton warp gives the weave the stability to carry it.

At home

A rug this size suits a living or dining room, under a table or a sofa group. Against dark furniture the navy ground holds its own, and the ivory medallion lifts the room rather than asking to be protected. Underfoot the pile is dense, fine and short, made for a room that is used, not admired from the doorway. As daylight crosses it, the silk in the medallion catches first.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 350 × 247 cm (8.65 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 8.65 m² that is roughly 3.8 to 4.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
