About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, a hand-knotted city rug from the workshops of central Iran, measuring 297 x 248 cm (9'9" x 8'2"). Nain is graded by its "La" number, the finer counts reserved for the most accomplished work, and the type is best known for silk highlights set into a fine wool pile, usually against a pale ivory-blue ground. Here the ground is night-blue instead, close to black.
What you see
The first impression is a bold dark medallion floating inside a wide cream border. Look closer and the medallion is not the round or lozenge shape Nain usually takes but a scalloped octagon, its faceted edge cutting against the night-blue field. Across that field a dense floral vine scrolls edge to edge, its leaves and blossoms picked out in grey-blue and dusty rose, with small notes of red and slate blue caught among the scrolls. The border answers in ivory, packed with small palmettes and vinework, a calm frame for a field that is anything but calm.
How it was made
The pile is wool with silk worked through the highlights, and silk spins far finer than wool, which let the weaver draw the vine's smallest tendrils without them blurring into one another. That precision took knots: this piece runs to 441,000-500,000 per square metre on a cotton warp, dense enough to keep the scalloped medallion's edge crisp rather than stepped. At 12 mm the pile is clipped close, so the drawing stays sharp to the foot as well as to the eye, months of work sitting behind how cleanly that octagon holds its shape.

A rug this size suits a dining room, under a table with room to spare, or anchoring a seating group in a living room. The night-blue field holds its own against dark furniture, and over a pale floor it reads as depth rather than shadow, while the ivory border keeps the room open rather than closed in. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, with just enough silk to give it a quiet sheen, dense enough to be walked on rather than kept for best. Through the day that sheen shifts across the scrolls, so the octagon at its centre never quite looks the same twice.
