About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, also written Na'in, a fine city-workshop rug from central Iran, measuring 292 x 200 cm (9'7" x 6'7"). Nain is graded by fineness on a "La" scale, the lower the number the tighter the knot, and weaving of this quality is counted among the most sought-after in the Persian repertoire. Most Nain carpets build outward from a central medallion. This one does not.

What you see

The field is ivory, cool and airy, covered edge to edge in a dense scroll of fine floral vines, palmettes and rosettes, with no medallion to interrupt it. The eye simply travels the pattern rather than settling on a centre. Sprigs of dusty rose, navy, taupe and a pale blue-grey are worked through the vine, small enough to read as accents rather than blocks of colour. A wide camel-toned border, carrying the same scrollwork, closes the field softly, taking up close to a fifth of the rug's width.

How it was made

Nain weavers set the character of a piece before the first knot is tied, by carrying silk through a wool pile. Silk spins far finer than wool, so wherever it runs the outline of a petal or tendril sharpens, catching a little more light than the wool around it. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand over a cotton warp, that fineness holds even at 10 millimetres of pile. The same discipline shows in the drawing: with no medallion to build the design around, the workshop's cartoon simply lets the vine repeat, unbroken, corner to corner.

At home

At 292 x 200 cm the rug suits a dining table with room to spare, or a living room seating group where its calm keeps the space open rather than closed. Against pale oak it warms the room; against darker furniture the ivory holds its own without competing. The pile is short, dense and smooth underfoot, firm enough for daily use. Turn through the day and the silk highlights catch the light differently each time, the blue-grey sprigs cooling the warmth just enough to keep it quiet.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 292 × 200 cm (5.84 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 5.84 m² that is roughly 2.6 to 2.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
