About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, also written Na'in, from the workshops of the small central Iranian city that gave its name to one of the most refined weaving traditions in Persia. Nain is known for a cool ivory-and-blue palette, fine wool lifted with silk. This piece measures 232 x 163 cm (7'7" x 5'4"), and it breaks from that convention in colour alone.

What you see

The field is a deep wine red, dense with floral tracery in dusty pink, soft blue and grey, rather than the pale ground Nain usually carries. An ivory medallion rises from it, its outline split into an outer jagged ring and an inner floral star, giving the centre an unusually fine structure. Pendants run along the field's axis, and the spandrels repeat the same wine-red ground. A wide ivory border, built in several framed bands of scrollwork, closes the piece and reads lighter than the field.

How it was made

The wool pile is lifted with silk, the Nain method for picking out the finest lines, the floral stems and the medallion's inner star, in a fibre that takes a tighter knot than wool alone. Hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at a density between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, with the pile sheared to a shallow 12 millimetres, the surface holds crisp, close detail rather than a soft blur of colour, letting the medallion's two-part outline read clearly across a room.

At home

This is a rug for a seating group in a living room, or a dining table where guests sit close together. The wine-red field holds its own against dark wood, warming a room rather than lifting a pale floor. Underfoot the pile is short, dense and firm, made for daily use rather than for show. The ivory medallion keeps catching the light as the day moves across it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 232 × 163 cm (3.78 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 3.78 m² that is roughly 1.7 to 1.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
