About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain, from the city workshops of central Iran, 249 x 197 cm (8'2" x 6'6"). Nain has built its name in little more than a century on rugs of unusual refinement, wool woven fine enough to carry a scattering of silk, and this piece keeps to that standard while quietly setting aside the palette most associated with it. Where Nain is generally shown in a warm ivory field, here the ground has been laid in a cool, subdued steel blue, restrained rather than dominant, and it is this choice that gives the whole design its particular calm.
What you see
The first impression is of a large round medallion, ivory against that steel-blue field, held by a darker blue halo before it loosens into the floral ground around it. Cream spandrels of scrolling flowers fill the corners, echoing the medallion in miniature, and the eye is carried outward to a wide cream border, close to a fifth of the rug's width, dense with floral vine scrollwork that answers the field without competing against it. Nothing in the drawing is loud. The blue holds its ground, and the ivory does the work of carrying the pattern.
How it was made
That balance comes from the drawing and the knotting together. The cartoon is symmetrical and precise, as workshop pieces are, but the density here, between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, is what lets the scrollwork stay this fine at this scale, each petal and tendril kept distinct rather than blurring into its neighbour. The pile is wool with silk woven through it, and silk spins thinner than wool, so wherever it appears the line sharpens and takes a little more light, which is why the medallion and the lighter motifs carry a soft lustre the blue field does not. Hand-knotted, on a cotton warp, at 12 mm pile, it represents months of steady work at the loom.
At home
At 249 x 197 cm this is a rug for a seating area or a smaller dining table, somewhere it will be seen whole rather than glimpsed in passing. The steel blue settles rather than shouts against dark wood or upholstered furniture, and the ivory scrollwork lifts a room that gets modest daylight without needing colour to do it. Underfoot it is dense, smooth and even, sturdy enough for a room in daily use rather than one kept for best. As the light in the room shifts through the day, the darker halo around the medallion is what keeps catching the eye, the one detail that makes this piece worth looking at twice.
