About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, a city-workshop rug from the town of that name in central Iran, measuring 249 x 168 cm (8'2" x 5'6"). Nain is known for setting fine silk highlights into a dense wool pile, drawn to a workshop plan in the region's classic ivory and blue. This piece takes that tradition and turns the ground dark: instead of the pale field Nain is usually recognised by, the medallion here floats on deep navy.

What you see

The first impression is of an ivory medallion suspended on a field so dark it reads almost black, until the eye adjusts and finds a clear blue running through it. Fine floral vines in cream and powder blue cover that ground densely, with small touches of rust red and dusty pink caught among the flowers. The medallion and its spandrels are drawn in the same ivory, picked up again in a broad border of scrolling florals in navy and light blue, held by several narrow guard stripes.

How it was made

The pile is wool lifted with silk, hand-knotted on a cotton warp at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, fine enough for the workshop to draw each vine and petal with real precision rather than suggest it. Silk takes a thinner strand than wool, so wherever it is worked in, the line sharpens and picks up a faint sheen against the matte navy ground. That is why the medallion and florals carry their soft gleam, and why the drawing stays crisp even set against so dark a field.

At home

At 249 x 168 cm, this is a rug for a living room seating area or a bedroom, somewhere it is seen whole rather than lost beneath a large table. The navy ground holds its own against dark furniture and gives a pale floor real depth to sit against, while the ivory medallion keeps the room from feeling heavy. Underfoot the wool and silk pile sits soft and even at 8 mm, comfortable for a room in daily use. As daylight crosses it, the silk catches and releases along the pale florals, so the medallion seems to breathe against the dark around it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 249 × 168 cm (4.18 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 4.18 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
