About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, the silk-highlighted city rug of central Iran, in a compact 241 x 163 cm (7'11" x 5'4") format. Nain workshops are known for fine wool grounds lifted with silk detail, almost always in pale ivory and blue. This piece uses the same vocabulary but sets it on a deep, near-black navy field rather than the pale one the type is known for.

What you see

At a glance the ground reads almost black, dense enough to swallow the light. Look closer and it resolves into a repeating tree-and-blossom pattern, mirrored left to right, with no medallion to anchor it, so the eye keeps moving across dusty rose blossoms, sage foliage, and touches of red and gold. Slender bird-like forms sit among the branches, more felt than counted. A wide ivory border, its scrolling floral vine held by a slim navy guard stripe, frames all of it in calm contrast.

How it was made

That density is what allows so much to be held on so dark a ground. Knotted by hand at 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, on a cotton warp with wool and silk in the pile, this rug carries a knot count few workshops attempt, fine enough to draw individual petals and branches rather than merely suggest them. Silk spins far thinner than wool, which lets the knotter tie a tighter, sharper stitch exactly where the pattern demands it, and that same silk is what gives the blossoms their faint sheen. The piece is signed by the Habibian workshop, a name collectors of Nain look for.

At home

A rug this size suits a living room, laid where a sofa group or a pair of chairs come together rather than under a large table. Against a pale floor the navy holds its ground and keeps the room from feeling washed out, while the ivory border stops it reading as too heavy. The pile is clipped short and fine, six millimetres deep, dense and firm underfoot rather than soft, so it takes regular use without losing its edge. Sit with it through an afternoon and the silk in the flowers catches the light in patches as the sun moves, one bloom at a time.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 241 × 163 cm (3.93 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 3.93 m² that is roughly 3.1 to 3.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
