Where it comes from
This is a Nain, also written Na'in, a fine city-workshop rug from the small town of the same name in central Iran, long known for its refined knotting and for pairing silk highlights with a wool ground, usually in ivory and blue. This piece measures 250 x 165 cm (8'2" x 5'5") and leans toward a softer, more muted register than the type usually shows.
What you see
The field is a warm ivory, covered edge to edge in a dense lattice of grey-blue and dusty pink florals, the classic Mahi pattern worked so finely that the eye reads it as one even surface. Look closer and a small rosette gathers at the centre, barely differentiated from the lattice around it, with the faintest suggestion of quarter-medallions echoing it in each corner. A broad camel border of floral scrollwork frames the field, held in by narrow guard stripes in cream and blue-grey.
How it was made
Nain rugs are graded by La number, and a lower number means a finer knot. This is a 6La piece, hand-knotted at 641,000 to 800,000 knots per square metre, among the finest densities the workshop makes. Silk spins thinner than wool, so weaving it into the highlights lets the pattern carry finer line and softer shading than wool alone could hold, which is what keeps this quiet palette from ever looking flat. A density like this means months of work at the loom.

The ivory ground lifts a room with little daylight, while the camel and dusty pink stay soft rather than assertive against dark wood or pale floors alike.
