About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, also written Na'in, a city-workshop rug from the town of that name in central Iran, measuring 250 x 198 cm (8'2" x 6'6"). Nain built its reputation on wool fine enough to carry silk highlights through delicate floral medallions, its fineness graded by a "La" number that falls as the knotting grows tighter.
What you see
The field opens in a warm ivory, gentler than the cream-and-blue most Nain carpets show. A medallion in dove blue-grey sits at its centre, trailing pendants above and below, and the ground around it carries a dense scatter of small floral vines rather than open space. A broad border in dusty peach, worked with cartouches and scrolling vine, closes the composition across roughly a fifth of the rug's width, setting the whole piece in a softer register than the reds and blues the type is usually known for.
How it was made
That softness is not just a matter of dye; it follows from how the rug was built. The pile is wool finished with silk, hand-knotted at a density of between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp. Silk spins thinner than wool, so wherever it runs through the design the knot can be smaller, giving the medallion's edges their fine definition. A pile clipped to just 12 millimetres keeps that precision on the surface rather than in the depth of the wool.
At home
At 250 x 198 cm this suits a living room, sized for a seating area rather than a hallway. Against a pale floor the ivory and peach warm the room without shouting, and against darker furniture the blue-grey medallion holds its own. Underfoot the pile is low, dense and smooth, comfortable for daily use. In the evening, the silk in the medallion catches the light first.
