About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, a hand-knotted rug from the workshops of central Iran, 298 x 198 cm (9'9" x 6'6"). Nain is known for fine wool paired with silk, in medallion and arabesque designs usually set against cream and blue. This piece quiets that pairing further, favouring ivory and deep navy over the busier multicolour versions the town is better known for.

What you see

The first impression is a large cream medallion glowing against a deep navy field, the navy covered edge to edge in fine floral scrollwork in pale blue-grey, with small red and grey flowers among the vines. Look closely and the medallion is built from the same vocabulary as the field — a denser gathering of the same vines rather than a separate emblem. A wide cream border carries the pattern outward, filled with matching scrollwork and edged by thin blue-grey guard stripes, marking a firm line between field and room.

How it was made

Each knot is tied by hand, wool through a cotton warp, with silk brought in for the pale scrollwork and the medallion's outline. Silk takes a far finer twist than wool, so a weaver can draw a thinner line and a sharper edge with it, which gives the ivory vines their clarity against the navy ground. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this pattern was built up knot by knot over months at the loom.

At home

In a living room, under a seating group or beside a sofa, the navy field holds its own against dark wood and leather, while the cream medallion and border lift a pale floor without competing with it. The wool pile is dense and even, twelve millimetres deep, firm underfoot and built for daily use. Through an afternoon the silk catches the light as it moves across the room, the cream vines brightening and settling again as the sun shifts, a quiet rhythm that suits a design already asking little of colour.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 298 × 198 cm (5.90 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 5.90 m² that is roughly 2.6 to 3.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
