About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, a city rug from the workshops of Nain in central Iran, here in a size of 268 x 201 cm (8'9" x 6'7"). Nain has built its name on silk worked through fine wool, in the ivory and blue range the town has made its own, and this piece keeps to that palette. Where it differs from the type is in restraint: rather than a bold central medallion, the design leans toward a quiet, all-over floral vine, closer to Kashan than to the strong-medallion Nain most buyers expect.
What you see
The field is a pale ivory, covered edge to edge in fine slate-blue floral scrollwork that gives the whole surface a light, airy feel. Small touches of burgundy sit among sage-green leaves, and fine navy outlining keeps every stem and petal sharp against the ground. At the centre a rosette medallion is present, but only just — close enough in tone to the surrounding field that it never interrupts the pattern's flow, echoed quietly by matching quarter-medallions in the corners. A narrow border in the same ivory and slate-blue florals closes the design without ever contrasting sharply against it.
How it was made
That evenness comes from the knot as much as from the drawing. The pile is wool with silk worked through it, and silk spins finer than wool, so wherever it appears the knot can tighten and the outline sharpens — which is why this scrollwork holds its shape at close range instead of blurring into the field around it. Knot density here runs to 441,000-500,000 per square metre over a cotton warp, with the pile kept low at 12 mm so the fine drawing stays crisp rather than settling into depth. Worked hand-knot by hand-knot at that density, a rug this size represents months at the loom, and it shows in how cleanly medallion and field sit together, neither one pulling attention from the other.
