About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, also written Na'in, the fine Persian city weave from central Iran, here 200 x 150 cm (6'7" x 4'11"). Nain built its name on wool pile lifted with silk highlights, drawn with a level of detail few other Persian towns attempt, traditionally in ivory and pale blue. This piece carries that same precision into a deeper, cooler navy.

What you see

The field is a deep navy, covered edge to edge in ivory floral scrollwork — palmettes and rosettes in an all-over Mahi pattern, with no central medallion. This design is usually set on red or ivory; here it reads cooler and more formal in navy. Small notes of red, dusty rose and grey inside the flowers keep it from turning cold. A wide ivory border, filled with floral palmettes, frames the field, with a slender pale blue-grey stripe inside.

How it was made

This hand-knotted wool pile carries silk highlights, and silk spins finer than wool, letting the weaver pick out the veins of each petal and the curl of each leaf without thickening the line. At a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, that detail asks for months of work at the loom. A cotton warp holds the structure firm, and the pile is kept to 10 mm, low enough to keep the drawing crisp.

At home

At 200 x 150 cm, this rug suits a seating area — in front of a sofa, or in a bedroom. The navy holds its own against dark furniture and grounds a pale floor, while the ivory scrollwork keeps it light. The pile is dense and firm underfoot, made to be walked on. As daylight crosses it, the silk highlights catch and let go, keeping the surface alive.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 200 × 150 cm (3.00 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 3.00 m² that is roughly 1.3 to 1.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
