About This Nain
Where it comes from
Nain is a city workshop tradition from central Iran, and its rugs are graded by fineness on a scale called "La" — the lower the number, the tighter the knot. This piece measures 251 x 197 cm (8'3" x 6'6"), and it carries the wool-and-silk highlighting the town is known for, though not in the ivory-and-blue ground most Nain rugs favour. Here the field is a deep navy, and the effect is quieter and more assertive than the type usually allows.
What you see
The navy dominates first, a solid, unbroken depth of colour that reads almost as a plain ground before the eye finds the medallion. Rising from the centre is a bold ivory star, its points reaching outward as pendants that stretch far up and down the field, almost touching the border. Around it the navy is filled with fine scrolling vines in grey-blue and pale gold, dense with detail but never loud enough to compete with the medallion itself. A wide cream border, patterned with the same grey-blue floral scrollwork, closes the composition and gives the dark field somewhere to rest.
How it was made
A rug of this fineness sits at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, a density that takes a skilled weaver months of steady work on a cotton warp. The pile combines wool with silk, and silk spins far finer than wool, so the weaver can work smaller, sharper detail into the same knot without the design blurring — it is what lets the medallion's star points stay crisp rather than softening into the navy around them. At 12 millimetres the pile is substantial enough to hold that sharpness underfoot as well as to the eye, catching a soft sheen wherever the silk sits in the cream areas.

A rug this size suits a seating area or a bedroom, somewhere the medallion can sit as the room's quiet centre rather than being walked across from every direction. The navy holds its own against dark wood or dark upholstery, and against a pale floor it reads as depth rather than heaviness, with the ivory medallion doing the lifting. Underfoot it is dense and firm, wool at 12 millimetres built for daily use rather than for standing back and admiring. As daylight moves across the room, the silk in the cream catches it first, so the medallion seems to hold the light a little longer than the field around it.
