About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Nain runner, 241 x 78 cm (7'11" x 2'7"), from the city of Nain in central Iran, also written Na'in, a weaving town that rose quickly to the top of Persian rug-making. Nain is best known for fine wool touched with silk highlights, worked in a signature ivory-and-blue palette, and graded by La-number for how finely it is knotted.
What you see
The first impression is of a pale ivory ground, covered edge to edge in a fine tracery of steel blue-grey and navy florals. Rather than settling on one large medallion, the design runs as a dense, all-over Mahi lattice, and only on a closer look does a faint column of small rosette medallions show itself down the centre of the field. The effect is quieter than the density of the pattern would suggest. A multi-band border in camel and ivory, carrying a repeating palmette-and-vine motif, frames the field without pressing hard against it, its width kept modest to match the runner's narrow proportions.
How it was made
That quietness is earned in the knotting, not painted over it. The pile is wool lifted with silk, and because silk fibre draws far finer than wool, a weaver can trace each floral outline with a sharpness that wool alone could not hold, which is why the lattice stays crisp however densely it is packed. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, this runner sits at a density few workshops attempt, and the pile is kept to a shallow 12mm, low enough that the fine drawing never blurs, so every rosette and vine still reads clearly from a distance.
At home
A runner this size belongs in a hallway or along a landing, somewhere the eye takes it in while walking rather than all at once. The ivory ground lifts a hallway that gets little daylight, and the blue-grey tracery gives the eye something to follow without darkening the space. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, a weave built for daily footsteps rather than for standing back and admiring. As light moves across it through the day, the silk highlights catch and let go along the lattice, so the same quiet pattern seems to shift gently each time you pass.
