About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain runner — also written Na'in — 198 x 59 cm (6'6" x 1'11"), from the city of Nain in central Iran, a weaving tradition that came to define luxury Persian rugs within just a century. Nain is known for silk highlights set into fine wool, usually in a pale ivory and blue palette. This piece keeps that same precision but sets it in a far deeper colour.

What you see

A rich wine-red field carries the eye first, filled with scrolling floral vines drawn in a fine, unbroken line. At its centre sits a single medallion, elongated and pointed at both ends rather than round, its ivory ground giving it a clear lozenge silhouette against the red. A wide ivory border frames the field, patterned with a light blue floral meander and small rosettes, the contrast between red field and ivory border reading clearly even from a distance.

How it was made

The fine drawing comes from how the rug is built. A cotton warp carries a pile of wool blended with silk, hand-knotted at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — fine enough to keep each vine and rosette distinct. Silk spins finer than wool, so wherever it appears the line sharpens; it is what gives this medallion its pointed ends rather than a softened curve. At 8 millimetres the pile stays low, holding that drawing rather than smoothing it away.

At home

A runner this size suits a hallway, its length carrying the pattern the whole way down. The wine-red field holds its own without daylight; the ivory medallion and border lift what light there is. Underfoot the weave is dense and even, firm enough for daily use rather than careful stepping. As you pass, the silk highlights shift with the light, so the medallion never quite looks the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 198 × 59 cm (1.17 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 1.17 m² that is roughly 520,000 to 580,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
