About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, a city-workshop rug from the small town of that name in central Iran, long known for lifting fine wool with a thread of silk to produce some of the most refined designs the country makes. At 219 x 162 cm (7'2" x 5'4"), it is drawn as a single, quiet medallion piece rather than the busier all-over patterns Nain is equally capable of.
What you see
The first impression is a steel-blue star medallion glowing on a soft ivory field. Around it, fine navy floral scrollwork spreads across the ground in an even, unhurried rhythm, never crowding the space it occupies. At each corner a small cartouche echoes the same steel-blue tone, so the design folds back on itself in a deliberate, mirrored symmetry. A wide border in matching navy and slate blue, carrying its own scrolling vine, closes the field and takes up close to a fifth of the rug's width.
How it was made
The pile is wool lifted with silk, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at a density between 441,000 and 500,000 knots to the square metre. Silk spins far finer than wool, so wherever it is worked in, the drawing can turn a tighter corner and hold a cleaner line — it is why the medallion's edge and the scrollwork's stems stay this crisp rather than blurring into the ground. At that density, a piece this size represents months of steady work at the loom.
