About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, also written Na'in, a fine city-workshop rug from the town of the same name in central Iran, known for delicate wool-and-silk weaving in ivory and blue. It measures 302 x 193 cm (9'11" x 6'4"). Nain is usually built on contrast between an ivory ground and darker blue tracery; here the two sit so close in tone that the design reads almost as a single surface.
What you see
The first impression is a warm, almost monochrome ivory, barely broken by colour. Across it spreads a dense scrollwork of floral vines, gathering at the centre into a softly lobed medallion, with no corner spandrels to interrupt the field. Small touches of dusty blue, grey-blue and rose sit within the vines and rosettes, with occasional dark red and sage green. The border, in matching ivory, carries its own rosettes in blue-grey and rose, only a shade darker than the field, closing the design rather than announcing it.
How it was made
Achieving that closeness of tone took real density: between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp. The pile is wool with silk, and it is the silk that allows such fine drawing — it spins far thinner than wool, so each knot sits smaller and closer to its neighbour, letting the vine work and rosettes read as fine lines rather than blocks of colour. At 12 mm, the pile stays low enough for that drawing to remain crisp underfoot.
At home
A rug this size suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room, without overwhelming the space. Against a pale floor the ivory keeps the room light; against darker furniture it holds its own without competing. Underfoot the wool-and-silk pile is dense and smooth, firm enough for daily use. As daylight moves across it, the silk catches and shifts, and the tonal medallion seems to breathe quietly rather than announce itself.
