About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, from the small workshop town in central Iran known for fine wool touched with silk. At 231 x 157 cm (7'7" x 5'2") it is a Nain 6La, one of the finer grades the town produces, carrying the medallion and floral drawing the type is known for — though not in the palette you might expect.

What you see

The field is a pale cream, and the medallion floats rather than anchors the design in the usual manner. It is powder blue, star-shaped, set against navy and dusty rose floral motifs drifting across the field in low, even scrollwork, kept quiet in contrast so the impression stays airy rather than heavy. Sage green appears only as hints among the grey-brown scrollwork. The border, wide and matching in cream, carries small blue and rose rosettes on a scrolling vine, echoing the field rather than framing it sharply.

How it was made

The fineness explains the detail. A Nain 6La is among the tightest knotting the town produces, reaching 641,000 to 800,000 knots per square metre, and silk spins thinner than wool, letting the knotter carry the scrollwork and rosettes down to a scale wool alone could not hold. The 6mm pile stays low enough for that detail to sit flat under a soft lustre. Signed by the Habibian workshop, this piece carries its restraint in colour — powder blue instead of the ivory-and-red most Nain rugs favour.

At home

At this size the rug suits a living room, laid under a coffee table or across a seating group. The cream ground lifts a pale floor, and the cool blue medallion holds its own against darker furniture rather than warming the room the way a red Nain would. Underfoot it is fine and firm, dense enough for daily use, and afternoon light catches quietly along the scrollwork, a gleam the room keeps noticing.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 231 × 157 cm (3.63 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 641,000 to 800,000 knots per square metre; across 3.63 m² that is roughly 2.3 to 2.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
