Jewelry for the Floor

The Story

Qom (Ghom) is a relatively young weaving city — the tradition began only in the 1930s — yet it has risen to produce the finest silk rugs in the world. The best Qom pieces are woven entirely in silk: silk pile on a silk foundation, with knot densities reaching 400-1,200 knots per dm² in the finest examples. This extraordinary density allows for miniature-level pictorial detail — garden scenes, hunting grounds, calligraphy, and medallion compositions rendered with photographic precision. Asymmetric Persian knot throughout.

The silk itself gives Qom rugs their signature quality: a directional sheen that changes as you move around the rug, shifting from deep jewel tones to luminous highlights. The city's weavers are among the most technically accomplished in Iran, often working from cartoons (master designs) that take months to execute. Major workshops include those of the Mir and Habibian families.

A Qom silk rug is unambiguously luxury investment territory — among the highest price-per-square-metre of any handmade rug in the world. These are pieces for collectors, formal spaces, and those who understand that a great rug is a store of value. They should be kept away from direct sunlight and heavy foot traffic to preserve the silk.
