Where it comes from
This is a Qom runner, also written Ghom, 148 x 53 cm (4'10" x 1'9"), from the city workshops of Qom in central Iran, a name that stands for the finest and most jewel-like of Persian rugs. Where that tradition usually gathers around a single glittering medallion, this piece is laid out as a sequence of bands, striped rather than centred.
What you see
The first impression is of colour in bands: cream, navy and brick red running across the runner. Paisley marches in tight rows on the navy grounds, drawn in gold and tan with black contour lines, while small florets in dusty pink and pale blue fill the cream and red grounds between them. Five bands, cream-navy-red-navy-cream, give it a rhythmic, sequential structure, not a repeating all-over pattern. A wide navy border carries a dense floral vine in cream scrollwork, closed by a slim red guard stripe.
How it was made
Qom is famous for extreme knot density, precise enough to draw miniature detail, and this runner carries between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, knotted by hand on a cotton warp. That density lets the paisley keep its sharp black outline and the florets stay legible at this small scale. The pile is hand-spun wool rather than the silk most associated with Qom, cropped to ten millimetres, precise in drawing but warmer underfoot than silk allows.
At home
As a narrow runner, this piece belongs in a hallway or on a landing, seen in passing rather than sat beside. Navy and brick red hold their own against dark floors or pale boards, and the cream bands lift a hallway with little daylight. The wool pile is dense and firm, made to take daily foot traffic. The sheen along the paisley outlines catches the light with every step.
