Where it comes from
A Qom runner, 154 x 56 cm (5'1" x 1'10"), from the city workshops of central Iran. Qom is best known for its jewel-like precision, tight knotting and shimmering silk pile, worked from a drawn cartoon rather than from memory. This piece is knotted in wool rather than the silk the city is famous for, yet the discipline of the drawing is unmistakably there — only here it runs in bands rather than around a medallion.
What you see
The eye meets the stripes before anything else: cream floral bands set against bands of scrolling red and navy, running the full width of the runner with no medallion to anchor them. Each cream band carries pink and salmon palmettes, each dark band its own floral scrollwork, and the sequence repeats with a regularity that reads almost like a woven register rather than a classical field. A wide navy-black border, scattered with small pink rosettes, closes the composition, held in turn by a narrow terracotta-red guard that echoes the field's warmth.
How it was made
That regularity is the product of the loom, not chance. A cotton warp holds the structure true along the runner's length, while a knot count of 441,000 to 500,000 per square metre — dense even by wool standards — gives the weaver the resolution to keep each band's floral detail sharp and each stripe boundary straight, row after row, without drift. The pile is handspun wool, sheared to a short 10 mm, which sits close and firm underfoot and lets the striped register stay crisp rather than blurring into a softer, deeper pile. Producing that alignment across nearly a metre and a half of striping is a matter of steady, patient knotting rather than a quick pattern to fill.

A runner of this size and rhythm belongs in a hallway or along a landing, somewhere it is seen in passing rather than all at once. The brick red and navy hold their depth even where daylight is scarce, and the cream bands catch what light there is, so the corridor never feels flat. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for the daily traffic a hallway gets rather than a room to tread carefully in.
