Sannandadj Rugs

The Finest Kurdish City Weaving

The Story

Sanandaj (historically known as Senneh) is the capital of Iran's Kurdistan province and produces some of the finest quality Kurdish rugs in existence. The city's weaving tradition stretches back centuries—Sanandaj rugs were known in the antique market from the early nineteenth century, when the city was already a lively commercial center.

What distinguishes Sanandaj rugs is their refinement: compared to tribal Kurdish weavings, these city pieces are finer in drawing, with closely cut pile and clearly detailed design. Typical layouts include the Herati pattern, boteh/paisley fields, and delicate medallion compositions, rendered with a precision unusual in Kurdish tribal work. The palette is cultivated—muted sage greens, soft blues, refined reds—and these rugs feel urbane and considered rather than raw.

A Sanandaj rug is the ideal choice when you want genuine Kurdish heritage expressed through city-workshop sophistication.
