About This Sannandadj
Where it comes from
Sanandaj, once known in the trade as Senneh, is the capital of Iranian Kurdistan and the source of the finest city weaving the Kurdish tradition produces. Unlike the tribal rugs of the wider region, these are workshop pieces, drawn to a plan and knotted with a precision that shows in the fineness of the line. This example measures 165 x 124 cm (5'5" x 4'1"), a medallion piece built on the classic Sanandaj formula of clear drawing and a cultivated, urban palette.
What you see
A dense navy field carries the eye straight to a large stepped-diamond medallion, and the medallion itself is the reason to look twice. Instead of settling into one colour at its centre, as this layout usually does, it moves from cream at the outer step to a strong red and then, at the very core, into a pale dove-blue that catches the light against all that dark ground. Around this the field is filled edge to edge with small floral and geometric motifs in salmon, mustard and slate-blue, and the whole is closed in by a wide brick-red border of small floral rosettes, held between several narrow navy zigzag guard stripes.
How it was made
That kind of colour control comes from working to a fixed cartoon rather than from memory: a city workshop can plan three distinct tones into a single medallion core and know exactly where each will land, which is not something a tribal weaver working freehand would attempt. The hand-spun wool pile, clipped to a short, even 12 mm on a cotton foundation, is knotted at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, dense enough to hold the fine stepped edges of the medallion and the small filler motifs crisply in place rather than letting them blur into the field.
At home
At this size the rug suits a bedroom, laid where it will be seen on waking, or a quiet seating corner where there is time to look at it. The navy ground will hold its own against dark wood furniture while the cream and dove-blue medallion lifts a room that gets only modest daylight. Underfoot the short, dense pile feels firm and settled rather than plush, wool that is made to be walked on rather than kept for looking. Morning light across it will find that pale blue core first, and it is the detail you keep noticing.
