About This Sannandadj

Where it comes from

This is a Sanandaj, a Kurdish city rug from Sanandaj — historically known as Senneh — the provincial capital of Iranian Kurdistan, measuring 151 x 128 cm (4'11" x 4'2"). Sanandaj is held to produce the finest of all Kurdish city weavings, its workshops drawing designs with a precision rarely found in tribal Kurdish work, the pile cropped close so the pattern reads with real clarity.

What you see

The field shifts between deep navy, almost black, and a pale grey-blue, crossed by a strong orange-red scrollwork that moves like flame across it. This scrollwork divides the ground into compartments, dark and pale alternating in a near-checkerboard rhythm, each holding a bouquet of coral-pink and maroon flowers among olive-green leaves and touches of cream. There is no medallion; the pattern repeats panel by panel as an all-over garden design. A wide salmon-red border, set with rosettes, closes the field, held by narrow pale and dark blue guard stripes.

How it was made

A weave of this clarity depends on knot density, and this piece carries 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre — enough to draw the flame scrollwork as a clean line rather than a blur, and to keep each compartment sharply separated from its neighbour. The pile is handspun wool on a cotton foundation, cropped to twelve millimetres, close enough to hold the drawing crisp while still giving the surface its faint, even sheen.

At home

A rug this size suits a study, a reading corner, or a spot beside the bed. Against a pale floor the navy ground holds its own, while the coral border keeps the space from feeling cool. Underfoot the pile is dense and close-cropped, firm rather than soft, made for daily use. Morning light moves along the orange scrollwork, crossing from the dark compartments to the pale ones, then settles into the coral border by evening.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 151 × 128 cm (1.93 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 1.93 m² that is roughly 390,000 to 480,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
