Senneh Rugs

The Renowned Kilim of Kurdish Kurdistan

The Story

The Senneh kilim is one of the most renowned flatwoven textiles in the world—produced in and around Sanandaj (whose historical name, Senneh, gave these kilims their name). Senneh kilims are prized for their delicate pattern, refined coloring, and exceptionally fine weave. They are typically woven in wool on a cotton foundation, and the motifs—boteh, Herati flowers, small rosettes—are rendered in miniature detail across the whole field.

Interestingly, Senneh knot is actually an asymmetric Persian knot—the name is a historical misnomer in carpet terminology. But Senneh kilims themselves are definitively Kurdish flatweaves of extraordinary fineness. The finest examples display an almost painted quality, with extremely tight warps allowing incredibly precise drawing.

When people speak of the great kilims of Persia, Senneh is always among the first names mentioned—a flatweave that operates at the same level of artistry as the finest knotted rugs.
