About This Senneh

Where it comes from

This is a Senneh rug, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, measuring 150 x 125 cm (4'11" x 4'1"). It comes from Sanandaj, in the Kurdish region of western Iran, whose old name, Senneh — also written Senna — is attached to some of the finest drawing in Persian weaving. The town gave its name to a knot as well, the asymmetric Senneh knot, prized above all for the precision it allows.

What you see

The first impression is a tight lattice of diamonds in deep brick red and ivory, filling the entire field edge to edge with no medallion to interrupt it. Each diamond is outlined in dark navy, the cream ground showing through beneath like a second layer of drawing. Around this sits a wide guard border in blue-grey, loosely filled with floral sprays in coral, rose, ochre and teal, held in place by two narrow navy stripes. Where the field is drawn tight and geometric, the border reads almost painterly by comparison, a different hand working at a different scale.

How it was made

That contrast is built into the way the rug was made. The asymmetric Senneh knot sits close on the foundation, and it is what lets the diamond lattice keep its sharp edges and its close, even repeat rather than softening at the corners. The wool pile, hand-spun rather than machine-spun, takes dye with small natural variation, and this is what gives the floral border its blended, looser colour beside the crisp geometry of the field. Nothing changes in the construction between the two areas, only the drawing does.

At home

At 150 x 125 cm this is a rug for a smaller room with a particular spot in mind — a study, a bedroom, or a hallway wide enough to take it comfortably underfoot. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor without overwhelming either. The pile is dense and tightly clipped, firm rather than deep, made for a room in daily use rather than one kept for best. Sunlight crossing it through the day picks out the crisp lattice first, then settles into the softer colour of the border, so there is always something new to notice in it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 150 × 125 cm (1.88 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
