Schiraz Rugs
City of Poets, Source of Tribal Artistry
The Story
Shiraz (Schiraz) is the capital of Fars province in southern Iran and the great trading city at the heart of Qashqai, Khamseh, and Luri tribal weaving country. "Shiraz rugs" refers to pieces woven in the villages around the city by settled tribal weavers whose design vocabulary draws from multiple traditions: Qashqai, Khamseh, Afshar, Abadeh, and Luri.
The result is an eclectic, vibrant range. Classic Schiraz designs feature bold diamond medallions, strong geometric fields with stylized animal and bird figures, and a rich color range—deep red, indigo, ivory—with tribal spontaneity that keeps each piece feeling individual. The wool is hand-spun from mountain-grazed sheep, and the pile is typically medium to high with a warm, inviting texture.
Shiraz—the city of Hafez and Saadi, of Persian poetry and roses—lends its name to these hand-knotted rugs that carry the same spirit of beauty and earthly delight.
