About This Shiraz
Where it comes from
This is a Shiraz, a tribal rug knotted in the villages around the city in Fars province, southern Iran, measuring 305 x 208 cm (10'0" x 6'10"). Shiraz weavers draw on Qashqai, Khamseh and Afshar design vocabulary, and their rugs are known for bold diamond medallions set against dense geometric fields, in a palette of deep red, indigo and ivory.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red that is never quite flat: it lightens toward the middle into a soft salmon-pink band, the colour shifting rather than sitting even. Three dark indigo diamond medallions run down this softened axis, linked head to tail in the classic seh torandj arrangement and outlined in cream. Indigo spandrels echo them in the corners, and a wide navy border of small star and hook motifs frames the field, held between narrower ivory and red guard stripes carrying a serrated leaf pattern.
How it was made
Village weavers in Fars knot from memory rather than from a drawn plan, which is why the medallions run freehand along the axis instead of to a fixed grid. The wool is hand-spun from mountain-pastured sheep, and hand-spun yarn varies naturally in thickness and dye uptake — this is what gives the salmon-pink lightening around the medallions, a shift no commercial dye achieves evenly. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the weave holds the star-and-hook border crisply while carrying the medium-high, slightly nubby pile typical of the region.
