Where it comes from
Shiraz rugs come from the villages around the city of that name in Fars province, in the south of Iran, where tribal weavers from several traditions — Qashqai, Khamseh, Luri among them — have long worked side by side. The type is known for its boldness: strong diamond medallions set on a geometric field, and a palette that runs to deep red, indigo and ivory. This piece measures 292 x 203 cm (9'7" x 6'8"), a size that carries a room rather than sitting in a corner of one.
What you see
A deep brick red covers the field, and down its centre run three diamond medallions in navy, each touching the next at its point so that they read as one continuous chain rather than three separate forms. Small cream and rust-orange stars mark the heart of each diamond, with a touch of teal-green worked into the same points. The red ground beneath is filled edge to edge with fine geometric lattice, and the whole is held by a wide navy border carrying a repeating tree motif in cream and rust, broad enough to take up roughly a fifth of the width.
How it was made
The Seh Torandj, or three-medallion layout, is a known form across this weaving region, but it is normally drawn with the medallions floating independently, spaced along the field with room between them. Here the weaver has joined them, tip to tip, into a single chain — a choice made from memory rather than from any fixed cartoon, since tribal rugs of this kind are knotted without a drawn plan. The effect is a field with real movement running through it, in place of the usual static row. Hand-spun wool, somewhat uneven in its thickness as hand-spun wool always is, gives the pile its slightly flattened, matt surface, knotted onto a cotton warp.

A rug this size sits well under a dining table or anchors a seating group in a living room, and the red will hold its ground against dark wood or pale floors alike. Underfoot the pile is dense and firmly packed, flat enough for daily use rather than a piece to be kept from foot traffic.
