About This Shiraz

Where it comes from

This is a Shiraz, a tribal rug from the villages around the city of Shiraz in Iran's southern Fars province, at 288 x 199 cm (9'5" x 6'6"). Shiraz rugs draw on the pooled vocabulary of the Qashqai, Khamseh and Luri weavers who trade through the city, and are known for bold diamond medallions set into strong geometric fields. This one takes that boldness further than most.

What you see

The field is a saturated brick red, and down its length run three stepped lozenge medallions, each serrated at the edge, each centred on its own smaller diamond. Most Shiraz rugs stop at one such medallion; this one repeats the form three times, turning it into a running rhythm. Deep navy spandrels cut the corners, filled with small florets and scattered figures in cream and rust. A wide navy border, held between narrow ivory guard stripes, closes the field on every side.

How it was made

The wool is hand-spun by the weaver, thicker and less even than a mill would spin it, which gives the surface its faint ribbing and warm, matte hand. At around 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the weave is open enough to carry bold, graphic shapes rather than fine detail — exactly what a serrated stepped diamond needs to read clearly. A pile of some 12 millimetres sits on top, built up over twenty to forty years of honest use.

At home

This rug belongs in a living or dining room, under a table or in front of a sofa, where the three medallions run their full length. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built to take daily use. Through the day the red shifts between brick and rust as the light moves across it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 288 × 199 cm (5.73 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 5.73 m² that is roughly 730,000 to 920,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
