The Iron Rugs of Persia
The Story
Bijar rugs are nicknamed the "Iron Rugs of Persia" for good reason — they are technically the densest woven rugs in the entire Persian tradition, the result of a unique wet-loom technique. During weaving, the weavers dampen the pile with water and then beat it down with a heavy comb, compressing the knots so tightly that the finished rug is almost rigid. Asymmetric Persian knot on a cotton foundation; the pile is thick Kurdish wool. Because of this extreme density, a Bijar cannot be folded — only rolled. This is both a hallmark of authenticity and a guarantee of longevity.
Kurdish weavers in the Bijar district of Kurdistan Province have practiced this technique for centuries, producing rugs that combine bold Kurdish geometric designs with classic Persian florals — a fusion that feels simultaneously tribal and refined. The "Halwai" (confectioner's) Bijar is the finest sub-type, known for its particularly dense pile and collector-grade quality.
A Bijar is the right choice for high-traffic areas, family rooms, and anyone who wants a Persian rug that genuinely improves with age. These rugs do not wear down — they develop a beautiful patina. Mid to collector grade; antique Bidjar rugs in good condition are highly sought after.
