About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bijar runner, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish region of western Iran, 242 x 70 cm (7'11" x 2'4"). Bidjar rugs are known across the trade as the iron rugs of Persia, prized for a density of knotting that no other Persian weaving matches and for holding their shape and sharpness for decades. Most are made room-size; this one comes in the narrower, longer frame of a runner.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, opening into a black-grounded centre where three star-shaped medallions sit in a column, one after another down the length of the rug. Around them runs a dense Mahi lattice, its diamonds drawn in black against the red and filled with cream, sage green, dusty pink, mustard-gold and powder blue. Red spandrels close the corners at each medallion, so the eye moves from one star to the next as if walking the rug's own length.

How it was made

The density that gives Bidjar its name is at work here: between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, hand-knotted from memory rather than a drawn plan, which keeps the medallions sharp while a slight unevenness in the lattice records the weaver's hand. The pile is wool run through with silk, finer than wool alone, giving the surface its light lustre. Pressed to a firm 15 mm over a cotton warp, the weave is so compact that it cannot be folded, only rolled.

At home

A runner this size belongs in a hallway or along a landing, and the brick red and black ground carry a space that gets little daylight, warming a passage rather than needing one. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for a floor that is walked on every day, not spared. Walk its length and the three medallions catch the light in turn, one after another, the whole way down.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 242 × 70 cm (1.69 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 1.69 m² that is roughly 750,000 to 850,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
