About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, the densely knotted rug that Kurdish weavers in western Iran have long been known for, at 295 x 203 cm (9'8" x 6'8"). It carries the old name "the Iron Rugs of Persia," earned by a structure so compact it can only be rolled, never folded, and by a reputation for lasting decades even in busy rooms.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, filled with a fine Mahi lattice of rosettes and serrated leaves, with no medallion to interrupt it. Navy diamond outlines run through the pattern, and small touches of teal, olive-brown and dusty rose sit within the red. A wide ivory border, close to a fifth of the rug's width, carries red and navy florals and holds the field apart. A narrow stripe of stepped triangles in rust and cream appears to trace the fringe at either end.
How it was made
This piece is hand-knotted at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, among the densest in Persian weaving, on a cotton warp with a pile of wool blended with silk. Silk spins thinner than wool, so where it runs through the pile the knots pack tighter, giving the rosettes and leaves crisp, unblurred edges. The pile is kept short, at 15mm, clipped flat and even. It is this density that earned the Bijar its iron name, and that keeps it sharp underfoot for years.
At home
A rug this size suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, and the ivory border keeps things calm. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made to be walked on, and as light crosses the room the silk in the pile catches and lets go.
