About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish region of western Iran, 229 x 167 cm (7'6" x 5'6"). The type has long been known as the Iron Rugs of Persia: its knotting is packed so tightly that a finished piece can be rolled but never folded, and that density has made Bijar famous among collectors for outlasting almost every other Persian weave underfoot.
What you see
The field is a deep, saturated brick red, densely covered with a fine floral lattice in the Mahi style. At the centre sits a bold medallion in navy and cream, its outline sharp against the red, with pendants reaching toward each end of the field. The four corner spandrels repeat that same navy ground and cream scrollwork, giving the whole composition a mirrored, settled balance. A wide navy border, dense with floral scrollwork in cream, red and steel blue, closes the design firmly at the edge.
How it was made
That crispness comes down to the knotting. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this Bijar sits near the densest end of the Persian tradition, and a thread of silk is worked into the wool pile — silk spins far finer than wool, so the knot can sit tighter and each floral outline holds its edge rather than blurring into its neighbour. Being recently woven, the wool has also kept its full depth of colour, which is why field and border read against each other so sharply.
At home
In a living room, in front of a sofa or under a low table, the red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm rather than soft, built for a room that gets used rather than kept for best. As daylight crosses it through the day, the navy medallion and cream scrollwork catch the light in turn.
