About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, hand-knotted in the Kurdish regions of western Iran, 245 x 175 cm (8'0" x 5'9"). The weavers there work from memory rather than a drawn plan, yet the type has earned a nickname among collectors, the Iron Rugs of Persia, for a density and firmness that outlasts almost anything else made by hand.

What you see

The first impression is a deep, saturated red, carried further by a fine lattice of Mahi motifs filling the field in close, even repeat. Out of this ground rises an ivory diamond medallion set inside a navy octagon, so the eye passes through three distinct layers before reaching the pale centre — navy frame, red diamond, ivory core. Navy spandrels carry the same colour into the corners. Around it all runs a wide red-ground border of palmettes and vines, held apart from the field by narrow navy and ivory guard stripes.

How it was made

Bijar weaving is knotted at a density few other traditions attempt, the tightest in the Persian repertoire, and it is this that lets a pattern drawn freehand come out with a medallion outline this sharp — in most tribal work the line is allowed to soften, here it holds firm. A cotton warp gives the structure its rigidity, while the pile is hand-spun wool with a slight natural sheen and enough body that the rug cannot be folded, only rolled. The result is a rug that feels dense and substantial from the first step, made for the kind of daily wear that a piece meant to be kept for best would never see.

At home

At 245 x 175 cm this suits a seating area in a living room, or the foot of a bed, more naturally than a full dining table. The red holds real weight against a pale floor and stands up just as well to dark wood or leather furniture, needing nothing else in the room to make its case. Underfoot it is dense and slightly crisp, built to be walked on rather than protected, and it takes a busy room without complaint. As daylight crosses it through the day, the ivory medallion catches the light first, then settles back into the red as the room dims, a quiet change that keeps this rug worth watching long after it is laid down.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 245 × 175 cm (4.29 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
