About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving districts of western Iran, 309 x 206 cm (10'2" x 6'9"). Bidjars are known through the Persian tradition as the densest and most durable of all, the type collectors call the iron rugs of Persia. Here that weight sits in a pale, luminous cream ground, where the Mahi pattern usually appears on deep red or navy.

What you see

A dense, fine repeat of red diamonds fills the cream field, so regular from a distance that it reads almost like a woven print rather than a knotted rug. There is no medallion: the Mahi lattice runs edge to edge, diamond after diamond, in the all-over layout the design is known for. A wide navy border closes the field, filled with red and olive palmettes on a floral vine, its dark ground giving the pale centre something firm to sit against.

How it was made

That density comes from hand-knotting: some 200,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, set on a cotton warp and packed down hard, which is why a Bidjar this size is rolled rather than folded. The pile itself is hand-spun wool, clipped to about 15 millimetres, carrying a light, natural sheen rather than the flatness of a machine-carded yarn. Made in the last two decades, the wool still has the crispness of a rug barely worn in.

At home

This size suits a dining table with room to spare, or a living room where a sofa sits fully on it. The cream ground lifts a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, the red lattice keeping the eye moving without crowding it. Underfoot it is dense and firm, at home in daily use, and morning light catches the wool's quiet sheen as the field seems to lift.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 309 × 206 cm (6.37 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 6.37 m² that is roughly 1.3 to 1.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
