About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish regions of western Iran, sized at 228 x 140 cm (7'6" x 4'7"). Known across the Persian tradition as one of its most densely knotted types, the Bijar carries a nickname earned honestly: the iron rugs of Persia, built to hold their form and their sharpness through decades of use.

What you see

The field is a deep, even brick red. Across it runs a fine, dense Mahi lattice, its small florets in rose-pink, camel and dusty green. At the centre, a stepped diamond medallion holds a clean ivory core, drawn with a symmetry that carries through from point to point, two small pendant leaf forms leaning out just below its widest reach. Navy spandrels close the corners, and a wide navy border of floral vine, edged in cream, holds the whole composition firmly in place.

How it was made

This piece is hand-knotted on a cotton warp, its pile hand-spun wool set at around 251,000 to 320,000 knots per square metre, among the densest counts in the Persian tradition. That density is what lets the lattice stay so fine and the medallion's edges stay so crisp rather than blurring at the loom. It also gives the rug real weight: at 15 millimetres, the pile sits low and firm, and the structure is so compact that the rug can only be rolled, never folded.

At home

This size suits a bedroom or a quiet seating corner, easily at home beside a bed or between two chairs. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, while the ivory medallion keeps the eye centred. Dense and firm underfoot, it takes daily use well, and as daylight crosses the rug, the ivory core seems to glow against the red.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 228 × 140 cm (3.19 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 251,000 to 320,000 knots per square metre; across 3.19 m² that is roughly 0.8 to 1.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
