About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bijar, one of the classic rug types of Kurdish western Iran, here at 319 x 256 cm (10'6" x 8'5"). Bijar weavers are known above all for density: the weave is pressed so tightly at the loom that a Bijar cannot be folded, only rolled, and the type has long carried the nickname "the iron rugs of Persia" for how well it survives daily use.

What you see

The field is a deep, even navy, covered edge to edge in a small repeating lattice of diamonds and rosettes — the Mahi, or "fish", pattern found across Persian weaving. There is no medallion here; the pattern simply runs to the border on all sides, drawn in ivory with quiet touches of dusty rose and charcoal. That border is wide, close to a fifth of the rug's width, filled with brick-red floral scrollwork that stands out clearly against the dark ground.

How it was made

What lets that lattice hold its shape at such a small scale is the knotting. This piece carries between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, among the highest counts in Persian weaving, hand-knotted in wool blended with silk over a cotton warp. Silk spins finer than wool, so the knots sit tighter, and at this density the diamonds and rosettes stay crisp rather than blurring, with almost no shift in tone across the navy. The pile is kept low, at 15 mm, pressed firm rather than soft — the source of a Bijar's characteristic weight in the hand.

At home

At 319 x 256 cm this suits a dining table or a living room seating group rather than a small corner. Navy this deep holds its own against dark wood or leather, and warms a pale floor instead of competing with it, while the brick-red border keeps the whole piece from reading as cold. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made for daily footsteps rather than careful ones, and the ivory lattice shifts subtly as the light in the room changes through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 319 × 256 cm (8.17 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 8.17 m² that is roughly 3.6 to 4.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
