About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 204 x 152 cm (6'8" x 5'0"). The type is known across the trade as the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a structure so dense and firmly pressed that a piece can only be rolled, never folded, and for holding its shape through decades of hard use.

What you see

The first impression is a warm coral red, covered edge to edge with a fine, evenly spaced diamond lattice in navy — the Mahi repeat, drawn here with unusual regularity and no medallion to break it. Small motifs within the lattice carry dusty rose, camel, teal and near-black, kept quiet against the red ground. A wide ivory border, filled with dark red and navy palmettes, frames the field and is itself edged by a plain red band matching the ground.

How it was made

Wool and silk pile sit over a cotton warp, hand-knotted at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — among the tightest in the Persian tradition. Silk spins far finer than wool, letting the knot sit closer, and that closeness keeps the lattice lines clean and gives the field its faint sheen. At 15 millimetres the pile stays low enough for the pattern to read sharply, while the structure beneath it gives a Bijar its firm, heavy hand.

At home

This is a rug for a seating corner or a bedroom floor, sized to be seen whole rather than crossed in passing. The red holds its warmth against dark wood and stays calm on pale floors, and the dense weave takes daily footsteps without complaint. Wool and silk give the lattice a faint gleam that shifts as the light moves across the room.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 204 × 152 cm (3.10 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 3.10 m² that is roughly 1.4 to 1.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
