About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar runner, also spelled Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 249 x 80 cm (8'2" x 2'7"). Bidjars are known across the Persian tradition as the iron rugs of Persia, prized for a density of knotting that no other regional weaving matches, and for a structure so compact that the finished rug can only be rolled, never folded.
What you see
The colour opens on a deep, brick red field, tightened by a fine diamond lattice in the Mahi pattern. Down its length march three ivory hexagonal medallions, identical in size and colour, spaced with a rhythm that is rare in a piece knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan. Touches of dusty pink, olive-brown and steel blue sit quietly inside the medallions and the lattice. A broad black-ground border, close to a fifth of the width, carries dense ivory and red floral scrollwork around the whole runner, holding the red field firmly in place.
How it was made
The density behind that crispness is considerable: between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, hand-knotted over a cotton warp, among the tightest counts in the Persian tradition. Silk runs through the wool pile, spinning finer than wool alone and letting the weaver draw the medallion edges and the lattice lines with unusual sharpness. At 15 millimetres the pile is clipped low and flat, so the pattern reads clean rather than soft. The result is a rug that carries real weight in the hand, built for structure rather than for show.
At home
A runner of this size belongs in a hallway or along a landing, somewhere feet pass daily rather than linger. The red holds its own where daylight is scarce, warming a pale floor and standing firm against dark skirting boards. Underfoot it is dense and firm, exactly the iron-rug character, built to be walked on rather than protected. Catch it in low evening light and the silk in the medallions lifts a quiet gleam the length of the hall.
