About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish regions of western Iran, 176 x 114 cm (5'9" x 3'9"). The type has long been nicknamed the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a density of hand-knotting that packs the pile so tight the finished rug can only be rolled, never folded, and holds its shape and edge for decades under real use.

What you see

The field is a deep wine red, covered in a small-scale Mahi, or herati, repeat picked out in sage green, dusty pink and slate blue. Out of this rises an ivory-centred medallion built as diamond within diamond, each ring outlined crisply against the last and drawing the eye inward to the small ivory diamond at its core. Navy-black spandrels hold the corners, and a wide ivory border of floral and diamond motifs closes the field between narrow red and navy guard stripes.

How it was made

Bijar weavers knot from memory, not a drawn plan, packing the weft so hard between rows that the weave turns almost solid — the trait that earns the type its nickname. Density runs to 320,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, tight enough to hold the medallion's nested diamonds with a precision more often seen in a workshop cartoon. The hand-spun wool pile, sheared to 15 millimetres, catches the light unevenly, giving the red field a soft sheen rather than a flat one.

At home

This is a bedroom piece, sized to sit beside the bed rather than fill the room. The wine red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor alike, while the dense herati pattern settles into quiet texture underfoot. The weave is firm and substantial, built for daily wear, and the pile catches the light differently as the day moves across it.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 176 × 114 cm (2.01 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 251,000 to 320,000 knots per square metre; across 2.01 m² that is roughly 500,000 to 640,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
